I recently had the opportunity to explore the Earth-Centred Futures 2024 course offered by the Australian Earth Laws Alliance, and I must say it was truly fantastic. This comprehensive program delves deep into Earth-centred thinking and governance, covering a wide array of topics such as Earth jurisprudence, interconnectedness, Indigenous philosophies, Earth-centred law, economics, and politics. The course, facilitated by Dr. Michelle Maloney and a lineup of expert guest speakers, provides valuable insights that empower participants to apply their learning to real-world scenarios. I strongly recommend the Earth-Centred Futures 2024 course to individuals from all backgrounds who wish to make a positive impact on our global community. This course is perfect for those seeking to deepen their understanding of Earth-centered governance and contribute to a sustainable future.

I have already recommended the course to a couple of people. I enjoyed the breadth and depth of the course; I now have words and terms for concepts and ideas of which I only had a vague notion before taking the course.

Michelle is such a knowledgeable and generous teacher, and I also greatly enjoyed the fantastic guest speakers.

Thank you!

This is brilliant everyone. Ask questions and receive answers which improve your understanding and knowledge about Earth Centre awareness.

We have to, en masse improve our treatment of our environment. Otherwise our beautiful planet cannot sustain us, as we are part of this amazing home. Floating in space, perfectly balanced to give us and nature and animals etc, an opportunity to enjoy life and thrive.

Introduction to Decolonisation course - October 2024

I highly recommend participating in the "Introduction to Decolonisation" course. It is rich in resources, knowledge and wisdom and facilitated by leaders in the field who collectively are creating safe spaces to have much needed conversations. Change is possible when people become more aware and conscious of how we got where we are as a country. This course provides a pathway for us all to walk forward on together.

I loved the AELA/AAPAE 2025 conference. I instantly felt at home with this community. I enjoyed hearing presentations and having conversations that challenged my assumptions and deepened my understanding of possibilities and challenges for planet-centred ethical futures.

Ethical Futures for People and Planet Conference 2025

Ethical Futures opened my eyes to so many new ideas and concepts that were explored in provocative and generative ways amongst a fantastically diverse of people. The best conference I’ve been to by far!

For the past three years Michelle Maloney and AELA have partnered with the School of Justice to provide students with professional placement opportunities and real-world practice experience, while also contributing to career panels where students engage with various specialists in the justice sphere. AELA’s wide-ranging work in the Earth centred governance space helps our students to gain a comprehensive, culturally appropriate grounding in environmental justice, ecological harm, climate change and citizen advocacy/activism. Thanks to Michelle’s extensive knowledge, social justice consciousness and her sheer hard work, understanding around the fundamental issue of the future of our planet continues to increase in Australia.

Dr Dean Biron: School of Justice, Queensland University of Technology—December 2025

“Over the past three years, ACU has had the pleasure of partnering with the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA) to offer high-quality, meaningful internship experiences for our students across Business, Law, and Information Technology disciplines. Our collaboration with AELA has consistently demonstrated excellence in student engagement, supervision, and project-based learning. From the outset, the internship process has been exceptionally smooth and well-organized. AELA has taken great care in selecting suitable students, designing discipline-specific projects, and ensuring that each intern has a clear and purposeful role. Michelle’s leadership and supervision have been central to this success. Her ongoing guidance, feedback, and support have helped our students grow professionally while making valuable contributions to AELA’s initiatives.

Working with AELA

I would highly recommend volunteering with AELA to any law student who has a burgeoning interest in, or passion for, environmental law, environmental justice and Earth-centred governance. The skills and knowledge that you will develop, as well as the sense of fulfilment that comes with being part of such incredible work, are certainly worthwhile.

I volunteered with AELA as an undergraduate law student, from July 2021 to July 2025 and it has been a thoroughly enriching experience. I was given a wide range of tasks over the years, all of which have helped to expand my knowledge and skillsets. These tasks included: case and legislative research into different jurisdictions’ environmental laws; literature reviews; administrative assistance; research into First Nations’ laws and customs; delivering PowerPoint presentations to the AELA team on areas of law; participating in community outreach; performing project management of Citizen Inquiries, supporting and supervising the work of new undergraduate law students, and drafting plain English fact sheets for community groups.

I have also had the opportunity to develop my knowledge of Earth Laws via AELA’s regular workshops and seminars, often presented by inspiring experts from within and beyond Australia.

As a remote volunteer, I have stayed connected with the AELA team via regular Zoom meetings. These meetings give us an opportunity to share progress updates and our latest learnings, and to build connections with like-minded people from across Australia.

Michelle has been an incredible supervisor and mentor to me throughout this experience. Michelle is always understanding of the pressures of student life and grateful for any and all pieces of work, and her passion for AELA’s cause is very inspiring. I appreciate that she also always endeavours to assign tasks that align with my interests, strengths and goals.

Lillie Priede, July 2025

I really appreciated the time Dr Maloney took to guide me through the research process, and I feel I've definitely learned a lot from it. I enjoyed being introduced to an area of law I hadn't necessarily focused on before, and the explanations and feedback I received were extremely helpful. Thank you to AELA for your support throughout my university placement.

'Having the opportunity to Volunteer at AELA has been an excellent experience; I have enjoyed contributing to the outstanding work that AELA does through increasing people's understanding of ecocentric governance. I was looking for an organisation to complete my Pro Bono hours as a part of my law school degree when I came across AELA in my university's Pro Bono Handbook, I had always been interested in the energy transition space and AELA intrigued me.

AELA provided me with the assistance I needed to pursue my research task on the Rights of Nature - the task allowed me to practise and advance my legal research skills which I found very beneficial. I encourage all legal students to volunteer at AELA if you are interested in the environment and want to work with a fun team. Michelle and the rest of the crew are very supportive and are making a real difference in the way people see and interact with the environment.
